In this mini-course, you will learn about your rights as an employee and where to seek support for employment-related issues. Topics covered include minimum wage, preparing a resume, differentiating between legal and illegal job opportunities, recognizing labour exploitation, identifying verbal, visual, and physical sexual harassment, and knowing what to do if an employer refuses to pay you.
In this mini-course, you will learn the key aspects of housing law that protect students. Topics covered include lease agreements and what tenants need to know, the required notice period for moving out, where to file a complaint against a landlord, tenant rights under Ontario laws, actions to take if a landlord is not compliant with these laws, and more.
In this mini-course, you will learn the key aspects of cybersecurity and why it's so important. Topics covered include types of cybercrime such as identity theft, phishing, and cyberstalking; the types of personal information that may be stolen in identity theft; the various ways hackers can steal personal information; preventative measures to protect against cybercrime; and who to contact if you are a victim of online fraud.
In this mini-course, you will learn about the key aspects of water, fire, pedestrian, and bike safety. Topics covered include potential causes of house fires and how to prevent them, the importance of carbon monoxide detectors, the dangers of swimming in a backyard pool or pond versus a public beach, what to do (and not do) as a pedestrian involved in an accident while crossing the road, who is required to wear a bike helmet, and the rights and responsibilities of cyclists.
In this mini-course, you will learn key aspects of mental health, as well as issues related to addiction and suicide. Topics covered include the essential components of mental health; concepts such as addiction, coping mechanisms, acculturation, cultural shock, trauma, and stigma; the impact of mental illness on Canadian society; the prevalence of addiction and suicide in Ontario and Canada; strategies for reducing the risk of suicide; differentiating between healthy and unhealthy self-care strategies; and practicing a self-guided meditation as a self-care strategy.
In this mini-course, you will learn about misconceptions regarding sexual assault and violence; the concepts of coercion, stalking, and consent; the difference between giving consent versus not giving consent as it relates to sexual activity; the age under which a person has a relationship of dependency or trust and cannot provide consent; and the difference between disclosing and reporting sexual assault.
In this mini-course, you will learn about key aspects of budgeting and setting financial goals. Topics covered include types of financial goals, SMART financial goals and how to create them, why budgeting is important, online tools for creating an effective budget, and overcoming common budgeting challenges.
